Renew registration - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What vehicle registrations can be renewed online?
Most vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trailers and heavy vehicles) can be renewed online. You will need to renew your CTP insurance green slip as usual and get an e-Safety Check (previously known as a pink slip), if required, from an e-Safety Station. Both your CTP and e-Safety Check are now sent electronically to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).
  2. Where is the billing number on the renewal certificate?
The billing number can be found in the top left hand corner and the yellow highlighted section below the label (for heavy vehicles) of your renewal certificate. If there is no billing number on your renewal certificate, your vehicle is not eligible for renewal online. Check your renewal certificate before attempting. Refer to image below.
  3. What vehicle registrations cannot be renewed online or by phone?
You will need to renew your registration at a motor registry or by mail if:
    • The usage shown on your Certificate of Registration is one of the following: DEMN, OMNI, SALE, SBTX, TAXI, TOW, TOWT, or TRAD.
    • Your CTP insurer has not sent CTP details electronically to RMS.
    • Your inspection station has not sent an inspection report electronically to RMS.
  4. What do I need to be able to renew online?
    You will need to have:
    • Your Certificate of Registration renewal notice.
    • Your passed e-Safety Check (also known as a pink slip) from an e-Safety Station, if INSPECTION REQUIRED is printed on your renewal notice.
    • Valid CTP insurance (also known as a green slip) sent electronically to the Roads and Maritime Services by your insurer.
    • A valid credit card from American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa or the ability to pay using BPAY.
    • Primary producers must be in possession of evidence required by the Roads and Maritime Services.
  5. Can I nominate online to change what I use my vehicle for?
You can nominate to change the use your vehicle from and to some registration usages when renewing registration online for a light vehicle (Gross Vehicle Mass 4.5 tonnes or less).
  6. What usages can I change from and to using the myRego service?
You can change from and to the following usage types for light vehicles:
From - Private, Business, Pensioner, Charity groups, Primary Producer and Rental vehicle.
To - Private, Business, Pensioner, Pensioner Incapacitated Ex-serviceperson and Primary Producer.
  7. Will I be issued a new Registration Certificate if I change my usage online?
Yes, a new receipted Certificate of Registration (and label if applicable) will be issued if you change your vehicles nominated usage online.
  8. If I change my usage online, do I wait to attach the new label being sent?
Labels are no longer required for eligible light vehicles. More information is available on the Roads and Maritime Services website.

When renewing Heavy Vehicles (GVM more than 4.5 tonnes), you may attach the label that came with the renewal notice, as usage isn't shown. You may attach the new receipted label when received if you wish. It is an offence to drive a heavy vehicle with an expired label.

  9. Why must Primary producers be in possession of evidence required if the Roads and Maritime Services can't view evidence?
RMS will conduct checks and require proof to be sent to ensure that vehicle was eligible for a concession at the time of payment.
  10. Can I advise online that I am a pensioner and get the concession for renewal?
Yes, but only if your car is registered in your name. You can provide details of your Centrelink or DVA card on the myRego service and the details will be verified electronically by Centrelink. If your vehicle is registered in joint names, you will both have to go to a motor registry to notify your details and arrange the first renewal.
  11. What is deferred Centrelink validation?
The deferred Centrelink validation refers to Centrelink being unavailable to validate your pensioner details at the time of your transaction and the validation is being queued in the background for what we call a deferred validation when the Centrelink system is up again. Your concession will be provided subject to the deferred Centrelink validation at a later date. If the deferred Centrelink validation fails you will receive a letter from RMS requesting payment for the registration.
Centrelink validation service available time is:
    • Monday to Friday: 4am to 9pm (except National Public Holidays)
    • Saturday: 4am to 6pm
All other times Centrelink will be unavailable.

Note: if you are renewing/registering as a pensioner for the first time and Centrelink is offline, RMS will not be able to verify your pensioner status in this session.

    You have the following options:

    1. Try again at another time (see above Centrelink available time)
    2. Change to a non-pensioner usage
    3. Visit a Registry
    4. Call Roads and Maritime Services on 13 22 13
  12. What is CTP insurance (a green slip)?
A green slip is an insurance policy, which provides cover for compulsory third-party (CTP) personal injury insurance. CTP insurance provides compensation for other people injured in an accident when you or the person driving your vehicle is the driver at fault.

CTP insurance provides cover Australia wide, 24 hours a day for:

    • Your passengers.
    • Other road users, such as drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists and pillion passengers.
    • Injuries caused through the use of a trailer.
    It does not cover:
    • You for personal injury if you are the driver at fault in an accident.
    • Damage to property or other vehicles.
CTP Insurance is compulsory, and must be taken out when registering a motor vehicle. Compare CTP insurance prices at: www.greenslips.nsw.gov.au.
  13. Do all CTP insurers send details to the Roads and Maritime Services electronically, and how long does it take?
All CTP insurers now send insurance details electronically. However, there may be exceptions, such as policies paid at a Post Office. The time it takes for RMS to receive the details varies depending on the insurer. You should speak to your insurer to confirm how long it takes.
  14. I have paid my CTP insurance but the website keeps telling me I haven't. What's wrong?
Call your CTP insurance provider to check that they have sent it electronically to RMS.
  15. I have bought multiple CTP's. What do I need to do to complete online registration?
You will be asked to select the CTP Policy you would like to use from the drop down list.
  16. I want to renew my registration for six months. What are the requirements?
Six month registration is only available if you renew the registration within 21 days of the vehicle's registration expiry date. You will need a six month CTP insurance policy which has been sent electronically to the Roads and Maritime Services by your insurer. You cannot renew registration for six months with a 12 month CTP policy. Please note if you elect to pay by BPAY to allow for processing time, you must make BPAY payments at least 3 business days before the CTP 'use by' date or the registration will not be renewed.

  19. What is an e-Safety Check?
An e-Safety Check is a safety inspection report/pink slip. If your vehicle is more than five years old you will require an e-Safety Check to renew your registration.
    * Some exceptions apply. Please check your latest rego renewal notice.
  20. Do I need a receipt number for the registration renewal certificate?
Once you have successfully completed your registration renewal online or by phone, you will be issued with a renewal receipt number. Write this number in black ink in the space provided, on your Certificate of Registration. See image below.

For heavy vehicles (GVM more than 4.5 tonnes), it is not necessary to write the number on the registration label. Roads and Maritime Services do not send out a receipted Certificate of Registration or label unless you have also changed your usage or the registration term.
  21. How do I get the receipt number for the registration renewal certificate if I pay by BPAY?
The reference or receipt number given by your BPAY provider can be written in black ink in the space provided, on your Certificate of Registration. See image above.
  22. Do I need to write the receipt number on the registration label?
Labels are no longer required for eligible light vehicles. More information is available on the Roads and Maritime Services website.

When renewing Heavy Vehicles (GVM more than 4.5 tonnes), you should attach the label to your vehicle after payment without a receipt number. 23. How do I get a GST tax invoice?
If your vehicle had a HVIS inspection, your Certificate of Registration can be used as a GST tax invoice.
